The Up North Woodland Workshop was held on March 9, 2013. About 100 registered participants made it through challenging road conditions to Itasca Community College in Grand Rapids for a full day of presentations, questions and answers, and discussion about Minnesota family woodlands. Thirteen others attended either from home or the Cloquet or Mankato broadcast sites. The event was planned for Minnesota family woodland owners, although a variety of others also attended. Phenology (John Latimer): Discuss phenology, the rhythmic biological events as they relate to nature. When do certain events happen and how is this timing related to climate?
Forests and their Pesky Friends (Jana Albers): Find out the top forest pests of 2012 and the trends and expectations for 2013, including forest tent caterpillars (and dealing with them), gypsy moths, and emerald ash borers. Find out where insect and disease information is online, and use of the Arrest-the-Pest hotline.
Forest Resilience (Eli Sagor): Discover how prolonged drought, large-scale wind events, forest pests and invasive species impact forests, and how to increase the inherent resilience to these and other threats. Focus on specic steps that can be taken to reduce risk and make long-term visions a more likely reality.
Wildlife Habitat: Top ten tips (Jodie Provost): Maximize your forest’s potential as habitat for a diversity of native wildlife. Hear the top 10 tips, including technical advice and resources that will help you reach your goal of a healthy, thriving forest wildlife community.
Property Taxes and Incentive Payments (Mike Reichenbach): Hear an overview and requirements about the tax programs to sustainably manage your woodland and get a reduction in property taxes, a deferral of property taxes, or an incentive payment.
This event is offered by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and the University of Minnesota Extension Forestry team.

Any thoughts of adding a downlink site in the Twin Cities?
Thanks,
We’d like to Greg, but I’ll be in Grand Rapids managing the broadcast (and presenting) there and Diomy will be hosting a site in Brainerd. For future events like this (and there will be more), if MFA or RGS or another organization wants to try to host a site and can manage the technology, we would be very happy to accommodate that. This first time through though, I think we’ll keep it simple and make certain that get all the electrons where they need to be. Thanks for your interest though.

Makes sense Eli – thanks for getting back to me. We’re having an TC Chapter – RGS board meeting tomorrow night, I’ll bring it up. I’ll be in touch.
Take care,
Greg
I’d be interested in the possibility of a booth for the distribution of the signs and cards generated from a new ecological covenant project I’ve been working on.
It is drawn from the idea of the american tree farm sign, and the project’s result is a weatherproof outdoor sign available as a statement of general environmental consciousness.
Can you show me to the booth registration form ?
Do you have a ballpark number on projected attendance ?
Thanks for your interest Kent. I’ve received other requests like this as well and am pleased to see people excited about the event. I will forward this to the other event organizers and one of us will get back to you.
